The upcoming spring school semester can leave your students eager to escape school and enjoy the warm weather outdoors. So, how can you make the spring semester more interesting and fun for your students? Below, are a few tips you can use for making school worthwhile to your students, from creating fun “themed” days to taking your classroom teachings outdoors.
Create “Themed” Days
Depending on what grade students you teach, consider creating “themed” days. On these school days, you should focus on different topics you’re currently teaching and host special activities to help your students become more interested in them. For example, if you’re learning about the food and culture of Native Americans in America, consider bringing in food and artifacts to peak their interest.
Add More Tech to the Classroom
If your students are used to class pencils and paper to take notes and tests in class, it’s never been a better time to use more technology in the classroom! Although the type of tech you use will depend on your school’s budget, consider renting Chromebooks that your students can use to collaborate on big projects and use to complete homework assignments.
Plan More Collaborative Assignments
To spark creativity amongst your students, you should plan more collaborative projects for them to work on. Not only will they be able to strengthen relationships within each other, but also be able to take advantage of each other’s top skill sets, whether it’s research, project management, leadership, etc. Plus, working in group settings usually leaves students excited, rather than being left with a significant assignment to do on their own.
See if You Can Bring the Class Outdoors
If you notice a lot of your students daydreaming out the window of your classroom, you should consider asking upper management if you can take your class outdoors. Normally, this just requires a release form to parents, letting them know their kid’s class will be outdoors at times. However, it can greatly impact students and some testing has actually shown to improve their learning and response abilities. After all, school can be pretty stressful.
Although school may not be that fun for your students, especially during the warm spring semester, there are ways you can make learning interesting again, from using technology in the classroom to seeing if you can bring students outdoors. Sure, it may be fun for your students to hang out with friends outdoors, but it’s just as important to get a lasting education without the distraction of the changing seasons.
